In connection with the EU’s Year of Poverty in 2010, the Fund projekt UDENFOR wished to create an experience in Copenhagen that could cause a focus on social exclusion and marginalization.
The regrettable tendency of an increasing division of the urban society seemed to make the gap between “them” and “us” grow bigger while a tolerating coexistence was left behind. The embracing city with room for diverse existences is threatened by the growing boundary between the dominating middle-class and the less fortunate “odd” citizens. For example homeless people selling the newspaper HUS FORBI, are experiencing most customers turning to look away instead of politely rejecting them with a smile or nod of the head.
Through Poverty Walks we wished to recreate the contact between people by using information and discussion to challenge prejudice and ignorance concerning life on the streets. Who are these outcasts, homeless, abusers and psychologically ill people? Have they decided to turn their backs on society or are we the ones who have rejected them? What are the consequences of loneliness and isolation and how do you obtain respect, understanding and acceptance from the world surrounding you?
