Projekt Udenfor

Poverty Walks in Odense
30-08-2010

Saturday morning the local Hus Forbi (Danish homeless newspaper) salesman, Niels, took 20 interested locals and visitors on a guided pilot-tour around Odense’s overlooked nooks and homeless locations.

This tour was the first Poverty Walk outside of Copenhagen and the occasion was the annual User’s Bazaar (Brugernes Bazar) in Kongens Have in Odense. The bazaar is a big event where users and professionals meet, debate and spend time together. There’s a very pleasant atmosphere among the tents in which each organization has a presentation booth set up.

The alternative city walk was just one of several activities this day and it attracted lots of attention. After the walk many attendants were very enthusiastic and praised the guide as well as the project itself. Several locals requested Poverty Walks as a continuing event for citizens of Odense.

Poverty Walks started in June with five local guides in Copenhagen. The project started really well and the city walks have become a great success.

- We are definitely considering expanding Poverty Walks to other parts of Denmark and this was a very positive first attempt, says project coordinator Susannah Larrabee Sønderlund.
