3. Why does someone become homeless

People become homeless for many reasons. It is often said that it could happen to all of us, if we run out of luck. In a way, this is true – but the risk is not equal for everyone.
If a person has grown up in a socially challenged environment, the risk of becoming homeless later in life increases considerably. Men are at greater risk than women. Drug and alcohol users without a personal network or an education, as well as people with mental illness, are also at considerably greater risk of becoming homeless. A person with numerous health or social problems is at greater risk than someone with only one problem.
In Denmark, we are still not good enough at taking care of New Danes (i.e. Danish citizens with foreign background) with addictions and psychological problems, and they are therefore increasing in number among the homeless.
